Ep 178: Finding Identity Where You Live (a conversation about homes and hometowns with Elizabeth Passarella)

Elizabeth Passarella and I have a lot in common: we're both authors, and mothers, and both moved from small, southern cultures to big cities to become writers. I spent my twenties working in reality TV while she spent the same time period as an editor at the top beauty magazines.

And then, having never met but with many mutual friends and chasing similar literary dreams, we released both of our books just weeks away from one another - first in 2021 and then this spring of 2023. On such familiar paths but on opposite coasts, it felt like the most natural thing in the world to finally record a conversation together.

Elizabeth Passarella is a contributing editor for Southern Living and former editor at Real Simple and Vogue. She has spent more than 20 years writing about food, travel, home design, and parenting in a variety of magazines. She is the author of two books, Good Apple: Tales of a Southern Evangelical in New York and her latest It Was an Ugly Couch Anyway: and Other Thoughts On Moving Forward. She grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, and currently lives in New York City with her husband and three children.

Elizabeth and I talk about her experience moving from the South to New York City, what happened when she bought an apartment in her building that belonged to a hoarder, and the ways she is able to write so honestly about her family. I truly enjoy Elizabeth and her writing, and I know you will love this conversation too.
