Ep 116: Selfie Shame

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Now THIS is a topic I've been wanting to cover for a long time.

Because whenever I do a social media challenge (like the currently running #OneDayMay) and I encourage people to post a selfie (as I often do), I scroll through tons of posts where women are APOLOGIZING for their self-portrait in the caption.

There are many reasons both personal and cultural that we feel extra vulnerable about taking and sharing selfies on social media, but in this episode I’m talking about the three most common reasons I see:

  • We’re unhappy with the way we look

  • We feel like selfies are indulgent, narcissistic, and annoying

  • We don’t mind being in photos, but we wish someone else was taking them

I look at selfies from all kinds of angles in this episode, hoping that it leads away from selfie shame and into selfie empowerment. But I also want to talk about why we judge other people’s selfies, and my unpopular opinion about oversharing.
